Meet our apprentice - Jack

August 9, 2017

Jack Bendrey (aged 19) joined us as part of an apprenticeship with The Engineering College in Birkenhead.  We've been finding out how he's getting on with us here at National Marine and how he wants to progress in the future.

1. When did you join National Marine Safety Boats?

October 2016

2. What does your job include?

My role is varied and includes engine servicing, engine rebuilds, launching and recovering boats and general boat maintenance.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job and why?

I get to work with boats and engines so it's perfect.  I enjoyed working with engines from a young age and one of my hobbies is to go sailing.  Being able to combine these is great for me.

4. What is your biggest work related achievement?

Being given the responsibility of working on my own in the workshop on bigger jobs.  I feel I have really progressed while I have been here.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you are not in work?

I do a lot of sailing including racing and have just bought my own boat.  I also do bell ringing which is very different to what you would expect.  It's very mathematical.

6. What would you say to people considering doing an apprenticeship?

It's a very good way of getting in to work.  If you get a good company it's a great way to earn while you gain a good qualification.  I'd definitely recommend it.

7.  Do you feel the company has supported you through your apprenticeship?

Definitely!  The jobs they give me relate really well to my work in college.  They also put me through additional training courses to my apprenticeship and I have recently passed my trailer towing course.
